Quirky boutique hotel The Megaro has dispensed with its formal lobby, turning it into what claims to be ‘the world’s largest minibar’. Called Minimix, this seats around 14 guests, but walk-ins are encouraged. The wacky back-to-the-future design (steampunk meets The Clangers in turquoise, copper, neon and gold) features Ron English’s cult metal mouse sculptures. The look is inspired by 19th-century quack doctor James Morison, who practised nearby. Latter-day prescriptions and pick-me-ups such as Silver Bullet, Gold Rush, Side Car and a doctored Cosmopolitan are among the self-service dispenses. On balance, however, we’re more at home in the hotel’s main dark lounge downstairs, The Bar at Megaro – an altogether less busy, more seductive proposition for cocktails in King’s Cross.
