SquareMeal Review of Madison

Spectacular views of St Paul’s and the lure of alfresco drinks high above the City ensure that queues for the lift to Madison build early on summer afternoons. Crowning Parisian architect Jean Nouvel’s One New Change development, this complex comprises a modest tapas and cocktail bar (beware the oppressive crush in fine weather) and – across the way – an altogether more spacious restaurant with flashy Murano glass, lots of shiny leather and a second terrace, complete with low couches. Sip wine or fizz by the glass, slurp a pornstar martini with vanilla vodka and passion fruit or explore the secret garden (Hendrick’s gin, cucumber and rosemary). The menu runs from small bites and charcuterie boards to salt-marsh lamb with roasted tomato and salsa verde – although quibbles over prices and service can dull Madison’s charms.

I took a guest to dinner lat month. We had a small table in a very very noisy restaurant that was dominated by a loud party in the restaurant. Starters were OK. But the steak we both had was poor quality and overcooked. Part way through the meal I complained to a senior waiter in private. There was no response. The drinks are hugely expensive and the view of London was through windows that needed a clean. The whole atmosphere was “ Take if or leave it”. Not a difficult choice.

Lovely venue but the only thing spectacular about it is the view – the venue internally has a very odd layout and feels like it cannot make up its mind between a restaurant and a lounge bar – the service was appalling – we sat our our table for nearly 45 minutes before anyone attended the table. The food is good but worth the charges paid for – is extremely overpriced for what it is. Would return for drinks and cocktails but not to eat in the restaurant.

We went to Madisons and sat close to the bar overlooking St. Pauls on Monday 10th July 2013. The views are amazing at this place but you can struggle to get a seat outside some evenings. There were 5 of us and I must say the bar staff were fantastic and could not do enough for us, so thank you Jean, Augustus and the other waiter who served us throughout the evening. We had bar food…bruchetta which was really tasty, prawns in garlic, and small burgers that were cooked to perfection amongst other food. All in all we had a fantastic evening and a place that I would recommend to anyone. Thanks for a great night :)

The venue itself is ideal. Well situated overlooking St Paul's, well laid out both in terms of the outdoor area and the restaurant inside. The staff were friendly from the very outset and attentive during the meal. Which is where the quality seems to take a dive. The fish (both the fish and chips and lemon sole) were lacking in flavour and languishing in grease. The burger was average – again somewhat greasy and missing some flavour. The salt and pepper squid was good – except it was missing that salt and pepper and the dressing that came with it didn't quite hit the spot. Bit disappointing for a business lunch.

Went there with friends after work and all we could hear was the managers sitting on their backsides doing absolutely nothing but drinking etc screaming and using foul language towards the other floor staff who were running around like idiots. The management needs a serious wake up call, like get rid of the lot of them and start again. I know of others who have also been there and have felt the same. London is a small place, one bad views escalates into 100's.

I had a business lunch here earlier today and it was probably the worst restaurant I have been to in a long time. The views are amazing and the place is beautiful BUT the service was terrible and the food pretty below average. I ordered a soft shell crab for starter which taste awful, so I didn't touch it. I ordered a virgin mary – the waiter asked me how spicy I liked it, I said ‘spicy’. When it came it tasted like they blended a tomato and stuck it in a cup. When I complained the waiter apologised and came back with something that tasted the same. We had burgers for lunch. They looked very average and the bun was cold. I asked for hot sauce and 10min later I was still waiting for it. I asked another waiter. 4min later nothing happened. I asked another waiter – 3min later he comes back to me, ‘what do you mean by hot sauce??’. On top of this, a waitress dropped a tray of drinks on a table next to us, they forgot our drinks and a few other things. I'd definitely recommend this place for drinks, it's beautiful and the terrace is amazing. But avoid it for food, City prices but no substance.

I felt compelled to write this review as I am appalled by the treatment we have received from the management at Madison. Having dined at the restaurant a few times, we decided to inquire about booking a space for our office team Christmas party. We contacted the restaurant at the end of October and confirmed a booking for 15 people for 6 weeks time. An email was sent to us confirming this reservation following our conversation. You can imagine our surprise then when we received an email 9 days later from ‘The Team’ at the Madison casually informing us that they were now awaiting confirmation for a private hire event on that day. We immediately contacted them and asked what the situation was. They simply confirmed that they were waiting for a confirmation on a potential private hire for that day and the potential party had a further 8 days to confirm; hence, our reservation was no longer valid. When we asked if that meant that they were bumping our reservation, they quickly altered their story and said that their computer systems had not been working properly and that this potential reservation had always been in there so no bookings should have been taken for that day. Unsurprisingly, we found this excuse less than believable. They then asked if we would like to reschedule for another day. When we asked to be compensated in some way to have 15 people change their plans we were informed that they would speak internally and send us an email with a compensation offer within 20 minutes. This email has yet to arrive. I find this kind of behavior from any restaurant to be unacceptable, but somehow this is made even worse by the fact that Madison is a newly opened, expensive restaurant trying to find its legs during very difficult economic times. You would assume they would make customer service a top priority. With so many other restaurants to choose from in the square mile, we have no intention of returning to Madison.

Great setting and roof top terrace. Serving staff very disorganized-seemed poorly trained. Food Ok. given a fantastic piece of Sirloin, but hadnt been seasoned and was lukewarm. It was expensive so a poor effort.
