Lounge Bar at Strand Palace Hotel (afternoon tea)
Smack-bang opposite the Savoy, the Strand Palace Hotel faces some pretty stiff competition when it comes to afternoon tea. This recently renovated pile (established in 1909) falls somewhere between
a swanky ‘grand hotel’ and the chain coffee shops in the area, which suits its mixed bag of business types, families and tourists to a T. Settle in at the hotel’s brasserie-style Johnston’s
Restaurant or bag a sofa in the Lounge Bar for the full tea experience: expect an all-in package of finger sandwiches, cakes, raisin scones with clotted cream and jam, plus a pot of tea for a
recession-busting £14.95. For a treat, add Prosecco (£4 a pop) or Champagne at £7. Tea from the London Tea Company may be from a bag, but at least it’s organic; other pluses are walk-in
availability and complimentary Wi-Fi.
