SquareMeal Review of Lido Café Hyde Park

With its sage-green decor, imposing pillared facade and stunning views of the perennially pretty Serpentine, Lido Café is simply too good for tourists alone. Despite its contemporary interior, there’s a feel of the past about the place – thanks in part to sepia prints of swimmers dotted along the walls and ever-present views of the Serpentine bridge. Most of the action takes place on the large waterside terrace, where dog-walking locals, city dwellers and polyglot foreigners stop off for a well-deserved G&T, a cuppa and piece of cake, or something more substantial – perhaps slow-cooked chicken with chorizo and butterbean stew, veggie pizzette or cod and chips with tartare sauce. The homemade house sundaes are not to be missed either – try the lemon-meringue version on a hot summer’s day.

I have been to this cafe several times before with my husband Neil. We love to come into London and walk alone the Serpintine and stop and have something to eat or just a coffee. The service has always been fantastic as well as the herbal teas and coffees. Recently my husband has had surgery and been disgnosed with ULCERATIVE CHROHNS COLITIS DISEASE. He has joined the Chron's Colitis uk, and with this he has been given a card that he is able to use " WITHOUT EMBARRASSMENT OR CONFUSION" to show when he needs to use a public toilet. He needed to use the disabled toilet at this cafe yesterday. To our COMPLETE UPSET AND HORROR, he was told by the lady who was attending to the toilet facilities that HE COULD NOT use this toilet. It was only for mother and babies. The other male cubicals were not accesible. This distressed my husband greatly and he nearly had a accident, which would of been TRUELY HUMILIATING for him. I then myself went into the cafe and spoke to a person who worked there. I enquired about if the public toilets next door where connected to this cafe I was informed that they were. I then informed the person I was talking to about Chron's colitis and what the CARD meant, that YOU CAN USE ANY PUBLIC TOILET anytime and anywhere. To my horror they were not bothered in any way and did not take any notice. This upset me and my husband and could of caused a upsetting moment for our day out in London. I HOPE THAT THIS SHOWS MORE AWARENESS OF CHRON'S COLITIS DISEASE. Also that no one else will recieve this treatment, if they are needed to rush to use the toilet facilities here.

For what might be viewed as a pure tourist attraction/trap this is actually a rather nice outpost, in particular during those times of the year (british weather permitting …) where you can sit outside and enjoy the setting overlooking the serpentine at hyde park. The food and drink offering is what you expect from a place like this but rather on the positive side (including the cooked rather than prepacked food). And there is just nothing better than sit outside and enjoy one of London's best outdoor spaces …
