La Forchetta

73 Upper Street Islington , London, N1 0NY

La Forchetta says

With its loud neon signage, La Forchetta on London’s Upper Street is pretty hard to miss. Yet somehow this little Italian restaurant has the reputation of a hidden gem, its name whispered from person to person alongside tales of to-die-for gelato and crazily authentic pizzas. Inside the glass fronted dining room you’ll find a warm welcome from relaxed, cheerful staff – a rarity on such a busy city street – in a comfortable, unfussy but attractive setting. La Forchetta’s menu is full of those favourite traditional Italian dishes, fish and seafood being a specialty with great pasta also available, but it appears to be those wood fired pizzas that really have guests raving, the crusts as thin and as crisp as any you’ll find in Naples. Desserts, including authentic gelato, are wholly traditional too. Extremely affordable, the prices lower than most in the area, La Forchetta is a real treat at a fraction of the price of more well known and less high quality restaurants.

When we entered it was empty which was strange for the Sunday before Xmas. However the waiter was very friendly and helpful with the menu. It did fill up later but the ambience even with just us 2 was very good. The food was superb and we both had the Sea Bass which was huge and delicious. The stuffed squid was very different and a good change from other calamari. Price was ok but did add the ubiquitous service charge but it was worth it. Definitely going back

This is the place for a good pizza – tasty, not too heavy, and the calzone was great too. The desserts were lovely, especially the tiramasu. The assortment of sorbet was on the skimpy side though – two small scoops for £4.95 is pricey. Service was excellent – a friendly and attentive young woman. We really enjoyed our first visit and will be back.
