With French music playing in the background, red check tablecloths and candles stuck in bottles, La Cocotte is ‘a bit like being on holiday without having to travel across the Channel’, noted one
fan of this cosy little Hampstead bistro. As the name implies, La Cocotte specialises in slow-cooked dishes served at the table in their heavy Le Creuset-style pots – think coq au vin, fisherman’s
stew or pork provençale. Otherwise, the menu is a familiar hike through the likes of pear and Roquefort salad, bavette steak with garlic butter and fries or roast rump of lamb with celeriac gratin,
sautéed spinach, rosemary and cassis jus, with profiteroles or French cheese to round things off. If you’re on a date or want something quieter, plump for the more subdued upstairs dining room.
