With French music playing in the background, red check tablecloths and candles stuck in bottles, La Cocotte is ‘a bit like being on holiday without having to travel across the Channel’, noted one fan of this cosy little Hampstead bistro. As the name implies, La Cocotte specialises in slow-cooked dishes served at the table in their heavy Le Creuset-style pots – think coq au vin, fisherman’s stew or pork provençale. Otherwise, the menu is a familiar hike through the likes of pear and Roquefort salad, bavette steak with garlic butter and fries or roast rump of lamb with celeriac gratin, sautéed spinach, rosemary and cassis jus, with profiteroles or French cheese to round things off. If you’re on a date or want something quieter, plump for the more subdued upstairs dining room.

La Cocotte is a great local place, we've been a few times now. We've been seated upstairs in the main dining room, or downstairs where it is rather small, but the intimate feel, good food, lovely service, red check tablecloths and candles stuck in bottles add up to a bistro type evening. We love the slow cooked dishes served in cocottes at the table. A bit like being on holiday in regional France without having to travel.

The best French restaurant in North London that I have come across this year. Food was delicious and well-executed. Staff was friendly and helpful. The deco is cosy with french music playing in the background. I will be returning soon and would highly recommend it.
