SquareMeal Review of
Kaleidoscope Whisky Bar
Opened by the Scottish Malt Whisky Society, this handsome new bar is freely accessible to non-members. The location, a Georgian former bonded warehouse, feels right, and the decor is appealing: scarlet banquette, a chunky bar, and some mighty malts (from a collection of 200) showcased in glass units. A characterful range of limited-edition single-cask whiskies is grouped into a kaleidoscope (capeesh?) of styles and flavours – each whimsically explained in a series of kitsch displays that includes ‘oily and coastal’ represented by samphire and a jar of Marmite. Single drams go from just over £5 to around ten times that amount. Whisky cocktails called Ahh Bonnie Charles and The Sassenach (a rich, fruity whisky-tini made with mint and orange digestifs) are joined on the list by non-whisky classics. Mid-priced wines and an interesting range of ales are also available, alongside Scottish-themed bar snacks: think venison tartare or haggis mac 'n' cheese.
