SquareMeal Review of Juniper Tree

Belsize Park resident Andy Kent is behind this celebration of British farming and organic produce, which provides a menu of classic, pub-style dishes overseen by Vincent Millet. With previous experience as head chef at Highgate’s The Red Lion & Sun pub, Millet cooks up a seasonal menu which might include game terrine with pear and saffron chutney or native oysters, followed by mains such as beef shin, chestnut mushroom and ale pie. There’s also traditional roast chicken with all the trimmings, while desserts range from sticky toffee and date pudding to a selection of British cheeses. Spread over two floors, the modern, neutral look of the ground floor is juxtaposed with a sleeker, more intimate basement dining room, which includes a table overlooking the pass. If mature, quality neighbourhood restaurants are your thing, Juniper Tree is aiming to be your go-to Hampstead option.

A lovely new local restaurant, offering organic British food with a couple of vegan options on the menu. The bread board to share included crusty spelt, rye and white breads with butter. Our roasted wild duck with celeriac mash and black cabbage, and braised shank of lamb with potato mash and red cabbage were full of warming wintery flavours and nicely presented. Service is friendly but seems a little unsure, but they have only been open a week so this will probably settle down. The rooms are stylish and it is clear a great deal of effort has been taken to make it look good, but comments were heard about how it feels a bit bare and could do with a bit of warmth and atmosphere. Early days yet though and we will be sure to go back and see them again.
