SquareMeal Review of Inamo Covent Garden

Like its Soho sibling, this cool neon-lit restaurant serves up futuristic fun alongside a menu of pan-Asian favourites. Your table doubles as an entertainment centre: spy on the kitchen with ‘Chef Cam’, play retro video games of Pong, or choose the design of your place settings (upload photos beforehand to create a personalised tabletop montage). This branch occupies three floors, including a stylish basement bar, and the kitchen features a robata grill. Place your order via iPad, and dishes (all made for sharing) arrive courtesy of the friendly, helpful staff. We began with nicely spiced Korean chicken wings and dumplings filled with tender squid and spring onion. Next, DIY duck pancakes arrived with herb salad, and miso black cod delivered classic silky textures. Well-executed sushi and sashimi, chicken satay, Wagyu beef and Thai curries are also offered. Sip on Saké Mojitos, Kirin beer or wines chosen to match the food.

I really loved the table based ordering system at the other inamo sites, but the new inamo in Covent Garden has taken it up a notch! You can now order through the tablets, and you get to see the entire food menu on one screen. It's much slicker than the tables and gives a good overview of everything ordered, plus it's easy to navigate through the other section of the menu. It's quite fun seeing what the other people on your table are live ordering too! The animations across the table are really great, although the little pointers are a bit odd, however the staff reassured us that it's a temporary measure while they work on bringing control of the tables to the tablet - soon you'll be able to control the lighting from the tablets! We played 3 player pong which was really good fun (once we had realised that you need to hold the pointers down across the bar to defend your goal). The food that was coming out of the kitchen last Thursday was exceptional - the sushi was fantastic, the duck with pancakes was fabulous and I particularly liked the wagyu sliders (although I thought the wasabi fries were a bit unusual & a little soft). I tried the kodama, which was a lovely fresh G&T cocktail and I also enjoyed the tropical storm, with pineapple & guava juice, passionfruit and rum. All in all, a really fun night and I highly recommend trying out the latest & greatest inamo!

Our booking was delayed by 30mins, which was made up for by a complimentary glass of house sparkling wine - we waited unattended for another 45 minutes for a menu trying to entertain ourselves with the 'attraction' of the animated table, with its stock photos of cherry blossom and a live cam of the cash register in the kitchen. The gimmick here is weak and only a troglodyte would be amused by ordering from an iPad whilst being roundly ignored by staff. After an hour and a half we left without ordering which surely saved our evening.
