SquareMeal Review of Ian Brown Food & Drink

Ian Brown spent more than 20 years as head chef at Glasgow’s iconic Ubiquitous Chip before deciding to set up his own gaff out of town. Occupying a smart residence in Giffnock, the restaurant has a genuine neighbourhood feel, with hardwood interiors designed by a local cabinetmaker, splashes of colour and genial service overseen by Ian’s wife Sheila. Seasonal Scottish produce provides the backbone for the kitchen’s efforts, although dishes are in the classic European mould of, say, seared West Coast scallops on rösti with Noilly part or grilled Perthshire pigeon breasts with Puy lentils and mushroom cream sauce. Haggis and fillet steak Diane suit the patriots and the traditionalists, while desserts range from baked Alaska to Scottish ‘tablet’ cheesecake. The wine list is short, sharp and invitingly priced for all pockets and palates.
