SquareMeal Review of Heeltap

A refit has left this Davy’s wine bar as sharp as the modern building it sits in, with extra sparkle from a glowing, under-lit bar & smart new furniture. The courtyard remains a big summer draw, & the setting goes hand-in-hand with a menu of gourmet burgers (buttermilk chicken, halloumi), stone-baked pizzas & a good old BLT. The wine list is a decent mix of Old & New World names, beers run from Budvar to Whitstable Bay ale, & jugs of Pimm’s make an appearance at the first sign of clement weather. A ‘heeltap’ refers to the tiny amount of liquor left at the bottom of a vessel – mind you, the quality & breadth of the booze on offer should ensure that you drink every last drop.

We are usually on the lookout for places to have a pre- theatre drink and snack . The Heeltap wine bar proved a pleasant surprise, It is in a new building located in a secluded yard not far from the Menier Chocolate Factory theatre. Unusually, our cocktails were both available and well made. Many venues including wine bars seem, in my experience, unaware of cocktails let alone how to make them. For a wine bar we found this commendable. Wine with our snack was of course good and the shared platter of fish meat and cheese dishes had a star in its anchovy and olive Bruschetta. A shared pudding was charmingly delivered with two spoons! The service really was excellent.
