SquareMeal Review of Hawksmoor Air Street Bar

True to form, the bar at this branch of high-stepping Hawksmoor actively encourages casual eating and drinking. Done out in art deco style, its elegant streamlined space makes a fine setting for bar food that is more surf than turf: try battered queenie scallops with lemon tartare sauce, silvery soused pilchards, oysters (perhaps served with sausages) or lobster in brioche, followed by salted caramel ‘Rolos’ or macaroons. Meanwhile, Hawksmoor’s ship-shape cocktails trawl various eras for inspiration – from sherry cobbler (an old Georgian faithful) and blinker (rye whiskey, pink grapefruit juice and raspberries) to shipwreck sour (made with Somerset cider brandy aged in oak casks salvaged from a wreck sunk off the Devon coast in 2007). There’s also a range of currently fashionable disco drinks including a pimped-up piña colada. Don’t be fooled by the male bartenders’ slacker-dude pose; service is uniformly slick.

People may complain about the prices in this bar but it helps keep this place classy and a bit exclusive. Top location, stylish design, first-rate service and flavoursome beers, soaked up with crisp, fluffy, urbane chips, mean its one for my notebook.

People are talking about the prices in this place being ok, because it helps keep it "exclusive". . . that would be exclusive of real people and not portentous morons so full of themselves? for what you pay here you get pretty average everything, and I've been lucky enough to dine and drink at the best and this is not it. I've done loads of entertaining and interestingly more and more entertaining (for large parties) is being done in house, that's getting a mobile cater to come to your office and they set up an event there for a lot less than going to the "exclusive" places. its a trend I'm happy to roll with if these sorts of places are the norm now. what's really great is some caterers (actually only Kudos Delivered as far as I know) have an option to make the function room look like what you want which I thought is a nice touch, but even if it didn't for me it beats having to hand in an expense account receipt for more than most people spend on holidays in a year. Easier to get a table as well. Any way, back to the point, don't bother with this place

Absolutely loved Hawksmoor, from the bartender to the waiter. I was quite shocked at the prices in relation to the quantities though! No fault in the food itself!

Under previous management these premises were known as a ‘Meat Market’. Under Hawksmore the emphasis of meat is on the menu rather than the clientele. They've done an excellent job re-decorating the room introducing a contained bar, and then opening the main room and furnishing it with leather banquets, whilst retaining the art deco windows and ceiling. As with other branches the meat is first class. The addition of a wide range of high quality fish to the menu massively broadens the audience for the restaurant. The wine list is interesting and competitively priced.
