SquareMeal Review of
Hawksmoor Air Street Bar
True to form, the bar at this branch of high-stepping Hawksmoor actively encourages casual eating and drinking. Done out in art deco style, its elegant streamlined space makes a fine setting for
bar food that is more surf than turf: try battered queenie scallops with lemon tartare sauce, silvery soused pilchards, oysters (perhaps served with sausages) or lobster in brioche, followed by
salted caramel ‘Rolos’ or macaroons. Meanwhile, Hawksmoor’s ship-shape cocktails trawl various eras for inspiration – from sherry cobbler (an old Georgian faithful) and blinker (rye whiskey, pink
grapefruit juice and raspberries) to shipwreck sour (made with Somerset cider brandy aged in oak casks salvaged from a wreck sunk off the Devon coast in 2007). There’s also a range of currently
fashionable disco drinks including a pimped-up piña colada. Don’t be fooled by the male bartenders’ slacker-dude pose; service is uniformly slick.
