SquareMeal Review of Harry's Bar

Silver Award

Inspired by Caprice Holdings’ private member’s club of the same name in Mayfair (and a cousin of Harry’s Dolce Vita in Knightsbridge), this open-to-all iteration of Harry’s Bar is in the rather less exclusive environs of St Christopher’s Place, home to Côte, Nando’s and Carluccio’s.

One inside, though, it’s old-school glamour all the way. The 50s-style interiors mix burnt orange banquettes with dark-wood panelling and splashes of gold, while low lighting adds a romantic touch.

An extensive menu of classic Italian comfort food (pizza, pasta, salads, steak) begins with tempting cicchetti, including balls of arancini which ooze truffle and parmesan, while puffed-up garlic and rosemary flatbread is a doughy delight. More substantial dishes might include ribbons of velvety pappardelle tied up with hunks of tender slow-cooked beef.

Our pizza was less successful. A dry disc of squid-ink dough topped with smoked salmon and sliced avocado smothered in an excess of dill sour cream wasted ingredients that should have been left for brunch; a simple margherita might have been a better bet.

Stick with the classics, though, and you’re unlikely to be disappointed, while thoughtful service from smartly dressed staff, luxe details such as pasta scooped out at the table from copper pans and playful touches like gold-dusted chocolate flakes scattered over decadent profiteroles make the size of the bill easier to swallow.

A list of classic Italian cocktails impresses (Negronis, Bellinis etc) while Champagne and by-the-glass wines are also available. Weekend brunch meanwhile, offers the perfect opportunity to take advantage of Harry’s charming outdoor terrace in the warmer months.

About

Within Marylebone, just a short walk from Oxford Circus, hungry customers will find Harry's Dolce Vita, a wonderful find for those who love Italian cuisine. Here, dining is celebrated in its most wholesome form, with dishes prepared with care, passion, and the finest ingredients available. Step into Harry's and immerse yourself in a world where every meal feels like a journey back to the vibrant Italy of the 1950s and 60s. Surrounded by exquisite decor featuring bright fabrics, rich green accents, and Murano glass, customers are transported into the very idea of la dolce vita. With a menu that is packed with Italian, every visit results in some very happy tummies.

Begin your meal with cicchetti like fried truffle arancini balls, tuna pizzetta with raw tuna, truffle citrus dressing, and basil on a crispy base, or crispy fried artichoke hearts with chilli, parsley, and parmesan. The antipasti selection contains dishes such as the creamy onion soup served with burrata tortellini and thinly sliced raw yellowfin tuna with picked white crab meat, citrus, black truffle, pistachio, and lemon ponzu dressing. The quality at Harry's is perhaps one of the most impressive parts. The olive oil is made with a special blend from organic olives that are grown on an agriculturally sustainable estate in the hills of Maremma, pizza dough is slowly proved for 72 hours to maximise flavour and provide a unique crust, whilst other ingredients and even tools are carefully sourced for what they can offer.

No visit to Harry's is complete without sampling their irresistible desserts. Treat yourself to the Italian twist on a mille feuille, made with crispy puff pastry layered with pistachio ice cream, chocolate mousse, caramelised hazelnut crunch, salted caramel, chantilly cream, and hot chocolate sauce.

EXTREMELY RUDE MANGER

My interaction with the evening manager was regrettable, as he exhibited extreme rudeness and disrespect without any semblance of courtesy. The manager's behavior during my family visit was highly unpleasant, marked by raised voices and an insistence on vacating the table, which created a tense atmosphere. The unprofessional conduct of the manager was evident, and even the waiter appeared to share our dissatisfaction with the manager. I trust that the head department will carefully consider this situation and take the necessary action, mindful of the legal implications. If not, we will be compelled to take further action, including filing a case against the establishment.

Nice atmosphere, very attentive and efficient staff. The food was disappointing - we had the crab tagliolini and pepperoni pizza, but all that either of us could taste was the Chili, of which there was simply too much.

A perfect little casual hideaway. Doors and windows were open, with people sitting outside so really felt like we were in Italy.

Unexpectedly good
A visit to a chain restaurant on a Sunday in December off St Christopher's Place. How good is that? The answer is surprisingly so. Although the area is chain central once inside it is hard to tell. The décor and lay out instantly take one to clubland in London or New York and although it does not have the patina of age it is soothing. The wood and leather together with the low ceiling height mean that the acoustics are good and although the restaurant was full by the time we left the noise levels were subdued. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and there are a lot of them meaning that the service is responsive particularly when wanting to pay as far too many places seem to not want to take your money. The tables are nicely spaced allowing for private conversations as well as giving sufficient elbow room. The menu is stuffed with classics all of which were well done and waiting times between courses was not excessive. The wine list is almost exclusively Italian and extensive with a wine to suit every price. Having arrived with low expectations we left planning our next visit.
