SquareMeal Review of Hare & Tortoise Blackfriars

The pubby name is a red herring: you’re more likely to sup on soup noodles & Asahi beer than a pie & a pint at the Hare & Tortoise. Now with a fistful of pleasingly stylish & even more pleasingly low-budget branches across the capital, it’s frequented by dreamers in search of that sub-£10 holy grail (think students, impecunious young couples & so on). The menu is ‘vast’, portions are ‘generous’, & the food not half bad. The core of the menu is Japanese (ramen noodles, tempura, rice dishes & sushi rolls), but you can cross borders for curry, laksa, spring rolls or chicken chow mein. It’s not so different from other noodle joints, apart from the fact that you can bag a table for two & aren’t obliged to sit elbow-to-elbow with strangers.

We read reviews for this restaurant and being newly converted to japonese thought we'd give it a go, The entrance and welcome were uninspiring but once seated the menus came quickly, no smile in sight from the staff, The food was well described for anyone that's unsure about raw fish , The side dishes didn't live up to the description but we're OK, we had Singapore noodles which were very tasty with some seriously hot chillies scattered on top, We then shared a gormet sushi box which was delicious. The bill came with a service charge added this is discretionary so we took it off, this is not America, and the service was only one step up from self service. Overall we would go back because the food was good and well priced and the place is handy for the mermaid theatre
