SquareMeal Review of Grapevine

Converted from one of the last remaining ‘handbags and shoes’ wholesalers, which were traditionally synonymous with Shoreditch High Street, Grapevine wine bar is sited next door to its sister watering hole, The Cornershop. It’s a super-casual hangout, launched in early 2017, with a sensibly pared-down wine list of two dozen or so won’t-break-the-bank bottles. Highlights include rich, jammy Chocoholic Pinotage from South Africa, mellow easy-drinking Fancy Pants Californian Cabernet Sauvignon, and among the whites a lively Argentinian Viognier – as well as ‘skinny’ Prosecco favoured by the area’s ripped-knee skinny jeans punks. Craft brews and limited classic cocktails are your plans B and C. Grazing options comprise sweet-potato and goats’ cheese tart, salumi, cheeses and tacos. The vibe is as low-key as the decor. We like the handsome back-bar vintage display cabinets, but aren’t so sure about the kitsch Venice carnival dollies, and cherubs on suspended silver crescent moons.
