"GOOD"

‘Wow… what a view!’ exclaimed one reader as he admired Big Ben and the city lights from this slick eatery in the London Marriott County Hall. Named after the famed 18th-century political caricaturist, Gillray’s is Bulldog British to the core, witness the chesterfields, Waterford chandeliers and original cartoons in the sophisticated dining room, and the 11 cuts of 35-day aged Aberdeen Angus beef on the menu –from T-bones and fillets to the show-stopping bull’s head (a gargantuan double-rib steak), all partnered by sides of black pudding, baked bone marrow and duck eggs. There are ham fritters and crab cakes to start, plus Dorset batter pudding and meringue pie to finish. The English spirit continues in the bar, with gins aplenty, craft beers and cocktails inspired by Gillray’s sketches. Service delivers, too.

Gillray’s in the London Marriott County Hall is every part the steakhouse: from the de rigueur chesterfield sofas and oak-panelled walls to the grass-fed English beef on the menu. Had dinner last night with clients, having been once before. Ribeye steak was unbelievably horrible - more like a boiled lump of gristle, and tasted rank, like it had been kept in a drawer for a few weeks rather than dry-aged-and-hung-to-mature, etc. With clients, so couldn't really make a fuss, but it was literally nauseating. Should note theirs' was fine, and service, atmosphere, etc also OK - but the Disaster Dish could just as easily have been for one of them. And £65 a head for steak, chips, salad and two beers each??

The staff are lovely....if not completely efficient. There was much confusion, reminders of things forgotten and an incorrect bill. However, everything was handled with charm, if slight chaos, so we really didn't mind too much. The food itself was very good and the ambience was extremely nice...it will be even nicer once the scaffolding comes down.

Visited Gillray's last thursday with some friends and I must say it was one of the best experiences we had for a long time. We arrived around 8 and the bar was packed with some great live jazz going on. We were welcomed and asked if we'd like to start with some drinks in the bar or move to the table straight away. Of course we chose to enjoy that nice Singer for a bit and had some great Gin cocktails. We then moved into the Restaurant and where escorted by a lovely lady to our table at the window. Wow … What a View! The big ben looking at us the whole night and the lights of the other side of the thames adding to this impressive scenery. We started off with some Yorkie's, lovely idea and then had some black pudding with scallops (apparently recepy of chefs grand-ma!) Finally, the steaks came and one was better than the other. I had a porterhouse – perfectly grilled with some lovely sides. All in all I must say it was a great evening. Prices are not cheap but adequed for what you get. Service was just perfect, friendly, personal but not overdoing it. We had a nother drink in the bar before heading back into the streets of london! We will be back soon for sure!
