Gillray's Steakhouse 1

Squaremeal Review of Gillray's Steakhouse ?

‘Wow… what a view!’ exclaimed one reader as he admired Big Ben and the city lights from this slick eatery in the London Marriott County Hall. Named after the famed 18th-century political caricaturist, Gillray’s is Bulldog British to the core, witness the chesterfields, Waterford chandeliers and original cartoons in the sophisticated dining room, and the 11 cuts of 35-day aged Aberdeen Angus beef on the menu –from T-bones and fillets to the show-stopping bull’s head (a gargantuan double-rib steak), all partnered by sides of black pudding, baked bone marrow and duck eggs. There are ham fritters and crab cakes to start, plus Dorset batter pudding and meringue pie to finish. The English spirit continues in the bar, with gins aplenty, craft beers and cocktails inspired by Gillray’s sketches. Service delivers, too.

Inedible and incredibly expensive

by   (1)

Apr 2017

Had dinner last night with clients, having been once before. Ribeye steak was unbelievably horrible - more like a boiled lump of gristle, and tasted rank, like it had been kept in a drawer for a few weeks rather than dry-aged-and-hung-to-mature, etc. With clients, so couldn't really make a fuss, but it was literally nauseating. Should note theirs' was fine, and service, atmosphere, etc also OK - but the Disaster Dish could just as easily have been for one of them. And £65 a head for...

Basically very good

The staff are lovely....if not completely efficient. There was much confusion, reminders of things forgotten and an incorrect bill. However, everything was handled with charm, if slight chaos, so we really didn't mind too much. The food itself was very good and the ambience was extremely nice...it will be even nicer once the scaffolding comes down.

amazing dinner last thursday

by   (1)

Apr 2013

Visited Gillray's last thursday with some friends and I must say it was one of the best experiences we had for a long time. We arrived around 8 and the bar was packed with some great live jazz going on. We were welcomed and asked if we'd like to start with some drinks in the bar or move to the table straight away. Of course we chose to enjoy that nice Singer for a bit and had some great Gin cocktails. We then moved into the Restaurant and where escorted by a lovely lady to our table at the window....

On entering the restaurant it looks lovely with excellent views. However, it took 3 hours 30 mins for a 3 course meal. A snail could provide faster service. The food itself was delicious but the choice on the set menu was a bit slim. I was there for a business meeting and one of courses for a diner was delayed. Sadly not one I would revisit.

All a bit underwhelming to be honest. We went here on a Telegraph offer – 3 courses plus a cocktail, £69 for two. Despite making all the usual pre-notifications during the booking, there was a distinct reluctance to accept the voucher on arrival, something that I've never experienced at the likes of Petrus, l'Escargot and even the Savoy. They then carved out all the bone-in steaks on the menu (the voucher only mentioned 3 of the 5) and didn't even suggest they could be ordered for a supplement. They...

Dinner here was bitterly disappointing. Out 6 diners 5 had steak, 3 left more than half of the meat on their plates and the staff did not even notice or ask if there was anything wrong. All diners thought the quality of the food and the service was extremely poor and the waiter offered the fact that they were busy as a reason when it was raised. For the prices they are charging Gillrays are bracketing themselves with Hawksmoor,Goodman and Cut. They fall embarrassingly short and seem unaware. If you...

OH SO LONDON :: Oh So London - Gillray's Steakhouse & Bar, County Hall - Oh So London

Yorkshire pudding for starters? Well that took me by surprise. We were at Gillrays’ – the highly-esteemed steak restaurant on the banks of the River Thames. The waiter had placed the giant cakes of batter before us with a pot of horseradish on the side and I was a bit baffled. As a Yorkshire gal, I like hot steamy gravy with my Yorkies but hey, you can’t beat this for the novelty factor.

I’d been marvelling at Gillray’s for some time before I finally got round to visiting. The fabulous setting in the former County Hall on the bank of the Thames is of course, one of its biggest draws. Once inside, an incredible...
