SquareMeal Review of Gaucho O2

The glitz factor has been amplified at this flagship of the Argentinian steakhouse chain, set over three glimmering floors. Yes, you’ll find Gaucho’s usual monochrome interior, with the signature cowhide-upholstered chairs & walls, & huge crystal chandeliers throughout – only here it’s bigger & better. There’s a cocktail lounge, VIP suite & basement wine-tasting room, all aimed at seducing the concert crowds & expense-account diners, for cheap it ain’t. The menu mirrors that found elsewhere in the group, so Gaucho’s famous ceviches (citrus-cured fish & seafood) whet the appetite for the main event: slabs of expertly cooked beef in all manner of cuts & sizes. Sauces & sides cost extra, so the bill soon mounts up even before you’ve added a bottle of Malbec from the unmissable wine list.

We arrived prior to a concert on Sunday 8th December and were told they couldn't find our reservation but luckily we were fairly early so could get a table. Not off to a good start I thought. The restaurant itself although quite dark is very classy and hits the right mood. Although our starters weren't anything to shout home about, I had the crab and avocado tostada. I say avocado but there were only 4 slithers of green in amongst what should have been very tasty crab but sadly it lacked seasoning and was overpowered by raw onion and tomato. Our steaks however were superb. I opted for a rump cut this time which was juicy, cooked perfectly and one of the best steaks I have eaten, almost over taking my normal choice of a fillet cut. The shared spinach, chips and sweetcorn were just the right amount. Our wine was delicious and not being able to fit a dessert in we opted for whisky and brandy which were both delicious. All in all a great start to our evening and will definitely be returning. Top tip - book in advance as they were turning people away when we departed, very popular and I can now see why.

I've never really been a fan of chain restaurants even those at the upmarket end and therefore despite having recommended the Gaucho for clients on many occasions, mainly due to its location at the 02, I had never eaten there myself and was in honesty prepared to be underwhelmed. I was refreshingly surprised at the entire package on offer and will certainly be revisiting. I enjoyed the best steak I have eaten in years and that includes my regular visits to the Hawksmoor Restaurants. The decor was relevant to the concert / evening environment that most would be using the restaurant for. I loved the cowhide, glass and chrome and wasnt expecting the layout in the bar to be as good as it is. There are some very comfortable and welcoming circular booths upstairs in the restaurant and the restaurant had a good buzz and was full. The range of steaks is better than I have ever experienced on any menu and I opted for a lower priced rump based on the lean description and was treated to a piece of meat that seemed to think it was a filet. Just magnificent quality and taste. The Sommelier guided me through the Malbecs which offered something superb for every budget. Overall it wasnt cheap, probably more than I had expected but then the service, menu and wines were far outweighed expectation, so all in all I would certainly recommend and will return.

We had a great experience overall. So good actually that we were late for the performance which was the main reason for coming to the O2! Friendly and easygoing yet professional service throughout the evening, amazing steaks with delicious sauces, sides of spinach and asparagus found a bit too salty but well cooked, the wine recommended by the waiter matched the meat perfectly. Would definitely come back!

So here am I thinking the Swallow Street branch was glitzy… As pointed out it seems that the Gaucho chain seem to go out of their way to do bigger and better each time. I was over at the O2 a few weeks back and had the rather dangerous idea of going a few hours early on the off chance I could find a walk in table at one of the many venues – being a fan of the Gaucho and all things meaty I was very happy to find that they could squeeze me in – perhaps the thousands of rock fans already at the 02 had turned vegan in their senior years? The Gaucho O2 is incredibly sexy and seems to be the biggest and best yet. Food as always is nice and straight forward – I'd like something light to start with (ok that's a lie – I ordered the Sausage Platter), and for main I'd like a huge steak nice and tender and I'd like it how the chef wants to cook it (it was the 300g Fillet by the way). You simply cant go wrong for a carnivorous treat.Vegetarians of the non-fish kind will always be a little disappointed but to be honest in the same way you don't go to SAF looking for a steak, you don't go to the Gaucho looking for veggie options. Prices for the mains are reassuringly high although starters are a lot more economical. Service is efficient – Presumably the staff understand that most of the patrons are there prior to an event so look after you swiftly and efficiently without compromising the standards. All in all a very fulfilling meal and I left very satisfied and rather glad that I had booked seats and not the standing area for the concert later. If you are off to the O2 I'd start the night here.

Wow-wee this must be the sexiest, spralling Gaucho yet. We had fresh, zesty cocktails in the ground floor lounge bar which was of course dark and seductive then we were escorted by the loveliest host up to our table in the 2nd floor restaurant. It was a show night in the O2 arena and the restaurnat was buzzing but as usual the service was absolutely second to none, the steak cooked to perfection and the malbec – yum.. Well done Gaucho, I dont know how you keep this consistency up.. excellent excellent excellent…
