SquareMeal Review of Franco Manca Chiswick

Since opening in 2008, this miniature artisan enterprise has built a cult following – thanks to the quality of its wood-fired sourdough pizzas, which are cooked in a special Tufac brick oven imported from Naples. Locals are attracted by the rock-bottom prices and meticulously sourced ingredients, so it’s no wonder that queues form around the block for a taste of Franco’s delicious offerings. Just six different versions are available, topped with various combinations of tomatoes (imported from Salerno), Gloucester Old Spot ham, sausages from Brindisa, organic mozzarella and ricotta produced at Alham Wood in Somerset, fresh herbs, mushrooms and the like. Charcuterie platters and panuozzi (flame-baked bread with various toppings) play a supporting role, while drinks range from a pair of Piedmontese organic wines (red or white) to Sam Smith’s organic blond beer.

This is a staple of ours and will continue to be because it simply does not disappoint. Quality food, quality service and the Ciu Ciu wine is fabulous. If I had to fault it? It would be it gets really really busy and is hard to casually chat but that is price to pay for this.

This is one of my favourite fail safes. Great pizza, super reasonably priced and a lovely atmosphere. The Organic full bodied red wine is a steal at £14 and my ‘veggie special’ pizza cooked to perfection. The sourdough base really isn't as heavy as other pizzas and the flavours so fresh. This isn't gastronomic, fancy dining but then again, when is pizza ever posh? I highly recommend a trip here, great for an informal date, girly catch up or for those times when you're too lazy to cook. A great quality meal for two with a bottle and a half of wine (yes, we were VERY tipsy) cost £30 – BARGAIN TIP: The specials on the board are usually the best option

Delicious pizzas, wine and beer offering is limited but what is on offer is very satisfactory. Service can be slow sometimes but always polite and with a smile. Amazing value for money!
