SquareMeal Review of Forge

Lively, informal and loud, this new venture from the Late Night London Group is a busy magpie mix of decorative inspirations – a sophisticated and ‘now’ offer aimed at young suits rather than the boss. Here’s to dining, dancing and drinking, with 20 house cocktails regularly selected from master list of 200 – perhaps a Glenfiddich and Poire William Old Fashioned or a Tanqueray 10 and absinthe sour (over-lemony and insipid to our taste). We also found the OTT portions of imaginatively presented food rather patchy: BBQ pulled pork was average street food, although honey- and soy-marinated salmon with a zingy, crunchy wholefood salad had a certain appeal. In the high-spec basement club/bar, you can order reasonably priced wines and world beers such as Einstök and Goose Island; otherwise splash out on vintage fizz at the VIP table (minimum spend £500).

Made a booking at Forge a couple of weeks ago. I was very presently surprised to how nice the food and drinks were at this beautiful venue. The waiters very tentative and made me and my partner very welcome. Will definitely be coming back with friends and family.

I do like Forge - very welcoming staff, not a huge menu but tasty dishes, decent wine list and good service. You can have a lot or a little and generally there's always somewhere they can cram you in even if busy. Unlike some places, the loos aren't a bus ride away and are clean. Buzzy when busy, chat from the serving staff when less so.What more can you want or expect in the City?

We settled in with cocktails, talked through the list by Giles (Restaurant Manager), who also gave us a historical background on the creation of the negroni. Clearly lots of thought has gone into the list which focuses on classics with a twist. In the bar and nightclub area in the basement, they had got a local artist to create the art in the VIP area wall backdrop as well as the textured wall in the private hire lounge. I enjoy my favourite drink - a negroni - whilst I made my menu selection. I plumped for the cider belly pork (£13). It was soft, succulent and complemented by the vanilla and Bramley apple sauce, and came with fabulous crackling that has not been over-salted (as has happened in other restaurants). Ended with a fabulous, well balance chocolate brownie with caramel ice cream.
