SquareMeal Review of Fishers in the City

Bronze Award

Sibling of Fishers Bistro, this city-centre outlet has sharper, more modern decor – albeit still with a nautical theme. The menu format is also the same, with a ‘favourites’ section including the likes of creamy fish soup, fishcakes, steamed mussels, oysters, steak or fish and chips. By contrast, the more sophisticated carte could bring grilled mackerel with gooseberry and elderflower chutney to start, followed by plaice meunière with fennel coleslaw, poached egg and crushed new potatoes, plus homely desserts such as sticky toffee pudding to round things off. There is an economical lunch/pre-theatre menu, while specials may include hot shellfish platters, langoustines, lobster thermidor, surf and turf (8oz rib-eye steak, crevettes and queenie scallops with chips, garlic and herb butter) or a huge chateaubriand for two with salad, chips and béarnaise. Veggies have their own menu.

Having trusted both the Square Meal description and one Guardian journalists article description I headed to Fishers in Leith with images of seafood platters and grilled swimmers fresh from the water not 50 feet from the restaurants front door. The menu greeted me with seared tuna & snapper to name but two foreign folk. I didn't see hide nor hair of anything remotely local apart from the lobster. Great to have local lobsters but hardly making much use of the surfeit on offer from the neighbouring docks. I did plumb for the seafood platter and unfortunately I was disappointed. It consisted of frozen green lips from New Zealand, frozen prawns you'd expect from Tesco Metro, smoked mackerel (not the real thing though, painted) and marinated anchovies again from the deli counter. I'd suggest you try next door or better still book ahead and go for Kitchin just round the corner, I couldn't get a walk in table but the menu looked fantastic!
