SquareMeal Review of
From the same stable as Tiger Tiger, Jewel, Strawberry Moons and Grace, Fifty9 is squarely aimed at a young, free-spending, mid-market party crowd – drawn to its dark housey ‘smart-casual’, basement nightclub. Order the eponymous house Champagne cocktail (dosed with St Germain and mint and peach bitters); alternatively, try Rhubarb and Raspberry Martini (with Chase rhubarb vodka) or Bitter Summer (Campari, Aperol and Galliano) – two of Fifty9’s signature sips from £8. Hungry? Tuck in to pizzette, charcuterie and cheese boards, salads, or roast chicken club among a selection of toasted sandwiches available all day. Just two weeks prior to its summer 2015 relaunch, Fifty9 had been trading as Babble, a venue the owners acknowledge had become ‘a tad tired’. The invariably busy retro-chic street-level bar may open on to Berkeley Square, but Fifty9 fancies it ‘could easily be in a plush park of the Meat [packing] District [in] NYC’. Babble, indeed!
