SquareMeal Review of Factory House

Opposite the Lloyds building in historic Leadenhall Market, this outpost of the Davy’s chain is kitted out with workshop-style tables, glass lamps, buttoned upholstery and other recycled Victoriana, plus some discreet booths resembling railway compartments for those who want to escape the hubbub. Food-wise, the focus is on two Josper grills, which knock out everything from spit-roasted game birds and baby chicken with paprika glaze to 28 day-aged rib-eye steaks, burgers, bangers and BBQ plaice on the bone with seaweed butter. Veggies aren’t ignored, either, with the likes of halloumi skewers and superfood salads assuaging meat-free appetites. As expected, there are plenty of affordable wines on the trademark Davy’s list (including lots by the glass), while cocktail fans can sip jazzed-up classics while grazing on modish small plates. “Always up to standard – never disappointed”, says one fan.

This was a great find of a nice place to eat. My partner and myself had a very good dinner at Factory House on a Monday night. Service was excellent, food expertly cooked and served promptly. Very comfortable dining room and very clean facilities. Bar area was busy and lively but background music was kept at a good level, allowing for conversation. It was through Square Meal's newsletter that I was able to find this venue in the vicinity of Fenchurch St. station. We are already planning to return and will recommend Factory House.

I was looking forward to trying the Factory House as its website and menu looked great, it is also a great location for work drinks and dinners so I was hoping to add it to a list of favourites. When I arrived I was shocked at how empty it was! Having beaten our way through a Leadenhall Market full of Friday night drinkers to get to it we descended down into the bar area which was pretty much deserted. It's a real shame as they have clearly spent a lot fitting it out to a high standard and the service was pretty good, the food was average which was surprising considering the chefs had very little else to do! Overall it was a disappointing evening which ended earlier than it should have done due to the uncomfortable atmosphere. Perhaps I caught it on a bad day but I wouldn't return in a hurry.
