SquareMeal Review of El Gaucho Chelsea

‘Cute, discreet and romantic – like a little wooden hut on the river Plate’, this ‘hugely authentic’ Argentinian steakhouse has been plying its trade among the hippy stalls of Chelsea Market for around 20 years and is more rustic than its younger sibling on Old Brompton Road. Stone floors, a hotchpotch of tables and candlelit wagon-wheel chandeliers dangle from the ceiling, while the tiny kitchen offers protein-hungry locals a succinct menu of ‘properly griddled’ meats, ranging from half a chicken to key cuts of Argentinian beef including bife ancho and churrasco (served with homemade barbecue sauce), plus hearty sides. Staff know their stuff, and the wine list is packed with broad-shouldered beefy reds. An outdoor grill springs into action when the sun shines, inviting customers to head for the terrace tables armed with bottles of cold Argentinian beer.

Cute, discreet, romantic – bordering on the magical. Winding your way through the closed Chelsea's Farmer's market to get there, what you find could be a little hut on the river plate. A hugely authentic Argentinian restaurant which is totally different and much more down-to-earth than the also excellent chain of Goucho Grills (different owners!). Talk to the staff, they take their meat very seriously here and it is made on a proper griddle. Excellent, good luck for many years to come, I hope.
