Edwin's French Wine Bar and Restaurant

SquareMeal Review of Edwin's French Wine Bar and Restaurant

After cutting his teeth in advertising, Edwin Chan opened his first bar in Lyon during 2007 before setting up in Shoreditch some five years later. Eschewing the edginess you’d expect in this part of town, Edwin’s has a very neutral – some might say bland – decor of browns and creams, but the food and wine is worth shouting about. We’re in classic French bistro territory here, with small-plate starters of pan-fried foie gras, wild boar terrine or seared scallops with lentils, plus regional charcuterie. Mains could see confit duck leg or roasted pork belly, while £12 daily specials might feature pot-au-feu or beef bourguignon. Cheese is a good way to end, particularly with a pick from the judiciously sourced wine list (Chan imports privately from 70 independent producers). By-the-glass options promise an exhaustive vinous tour of France.

We went to Edwin's for drinks last night, and what a find! It is just on the edge of trendy Shoreditch, but a calm oasis of good food and good wine that's fit for grown-ups. Edwin generously gave us lots of good advice about the wines he's chosen for the list; we tried three different ones and each was better than the last (although none of them were very expensive). The cheese plate was magnificent – in fact, we ordered a second one! And the decor and the service were first rate. The prices were very reasonable. This was an unexpected find through Square Meal, but we will definitely be going back.

I went to this restaurant after reading a review, after a search for restaurants around shoreditch. Its a shame it is tucked away because I really is a great find. The menu is small and refined but not boring. The winelist is extensive and clearly carefully selected. The owner Edwin, who will probably be around, went to the effort of making the restaurant exactly how he imagined it. It is fantastic value for money highly recommend it for intimate dinners or civil dinners with friends. The duck confit is something special!
