Built in 1928, named after the WW1 Field Marshal, this red-brick former community centre looks like somewhere Captain Mainwaring & Co might indulge in a game of dominoes. Crouch End’s modern young Dad’s Army has higher expectations – met by the likes of London craft ales, fashionable Euro pilsners and strong West Country ciders on draught. Off-duty mums might prefer the Aperol Spritz, Campari Mojito and Chilean Sauvignon Blanc at around £15. The one-time British Legion club’s two halls nowadays host entertainments as diverse as live bands (folk, jazz-blues Americana), DJ sets, swing and jive dancing, vaudeville cabaret, and yoga. Hungry? Dive in to trad bar snacks, Sunday roasts, sharing platters, or scampi with caper mayo (among a selection of small plates, from £5). For filling up, there are burgers and fries, bangers and mash, or pan-fried sea bass with artichoke purée and sauce vierge, followed by sundaes, tarts and crumbles.
