SquareMeal Review of Dirty Martini Bishopsgate

This City branch of mid-market Dirty Martini is a zingy, postmodern, clubby lounge for off-duty suits avoiding the rush-hour trains from Liverpool Street. Half-price, generous pours are available as late as 10pm in the early part of the week, alongside discounted Champagne, wine and beers. As you’d expect, this venue features the titular drink made famous by its sibling bars in Covent Garden and Mayfair – served dirty (of course), dry, and in honey and lavender, pear, lychee, and chocolate varieties, to name a few. Other ‘dirty designs’ include a carrot cake cocktail, figgy in the middle, mischief maker (a Maker’s Mark bourbon, peach and passion fruit julep), and some curious scented exotica. There’s also a range of low-cal cocktails for the skinny-jean brigade, plus dogs and baby burgers, mini-skewers and platters to undo any good intentions.

Boycott Dirty Martini To be barred because you’re gay. Is that ok? In 2018? If you answered no then please can I ask you not to attend any Dirty Martini establishments. To be rejected from a place is embarrassing. To have it happen when you have just stepped out to have a vape even worse. This is what happened to my husband as we visited Dirty MartinI in Bishopsgate. We were having a lovely evening, buying cocktails shots and food. However, as soon as my husband went outside to smoke he was refused entry due to a “complaint”. After asking to understand what the complaint was and to speak to the complainant he was refused. The door staff and manager were completely disrespectful and sexist. Highlighted by the fact in the next breath they told the guys queuing they were not getting in as it was a “cockfest” down there. What era are we in?!! I know 90’s is in but there’s one part of that era that is better best forgotten and that is the disrespect for anyone not fitting the “stereotype” straight, white, young drinker. That persona does not belong in this new world and so Dirty Martini does not belong. I was disgusted, but unfortunately not surpised. Is this what we have to live with? Beefed up door staff and well dressed arsehole managers? I really really hope not....
