SquareMeal Review of
Darcie & May Green
The twin moored barges that house this vibrant bar-restaurant are part of London’s Daisy Green Collection of Australian café-cum-diners. With their eye-catching exteriors designed by Peter Blake, they’re an uplifting sight amid Paddington Basin’s sterile tower blocks. Hop on board for morning coffee, brunch Aussie-style (smashed ‘avo’ on charcoal sourdough with labneh, say), plus fresh juices, local craft beers and competitively priced cocktails: the likes of well-balanced Espresso Martini, Guava Bellini, and Moscow Mule on tap. Breezy lunch and dinner service sees a round-up of fair dinkum Australasian favourites. We enjoyed fried calamari, courgettes and green beans; and tangy bhel puri salad. Mains such as moist pink sashimi-grade tuna steak with raw Jerusalem artichoke, fennel and caper salad and salsa verde are equally ship-shape and portions can be daunting. Finish with orange polenta cake or double-cream Mars bar cheesecake ball and strawberries, a gooey sweet speciality of Melbourne we’re told.
