SquareMeal Review of Cous Cous Café

Blink & you might miss this tiny Moroccan den, half-concealed below the pavement on a Queensway side street. Descend the flight of steps & you’ll discover a charming North African eatery, decked out with tile-topped tables, coloured glass lanterns & berber rugs used as wall hangings. Fresh ingredients & subtle spicing are the kitchen’s touchstones, so start with the mezza (a selection of Moroccan salads served with flatbread) before moving on to something gutsier. Couscous is steamed to perfection (try it with merguez & harissa for an oily, chilli-laden kick) & the menu also runs to savoury bastilla pastries & assorted tagines (the lamb version with prunes, almonds, eggs, cinnamon, saffron & sesame seeds is wholesome & fragrant). Drinks include Moroccan wines & beers, as well as freshly squeezed juices.
