Cottons Notting Hill
This is a great new addition to the genteel end of Notting Hill Gate, far from tourists heading to Portobello. The original Cottons in Camden (30 years old) and Shoreditch are loud, earthy recreations of the Caribbean vibe, but this polished version suits W11 locals with authentic cooking across the whole West Indies spectrum. The sky-blue exterior opens into an airy double dining room with a glassed atrium at the rear and a cocktail bar listing the UK’s largest collection of rums. Lively tropical murals show waterfalls, parrots, lush foliage and a Bajan-shuttered chattel house. The menu has gutsy ackee and saltfish, jerk pork and barbecued baby ribs along with elegant scallops with passion fruit and lime, or salt and pimiento squid with lemongrass and green chilli. Delicious spiced coconut seafood casserole comes with punchy chilli mayonnaise, and a huge meat platter has enough salt beef, chicken, pork and lamb chops to feed an army. Indian influence from Trinidad shows in curries or grilled red mullet, and Guyana offers 48-hour slow-cooked beef pepper pot. Combine this with cracking cocktails (we love Tumbledown or Across the Border), no head-banging music and sweet service and you have a must for date nights.
