SquareMeal Review of Côte Soho

There are Francophiles behind this nationwide French brasserie group – that much is obvious. Every last detail, from the rattan terrace furniture and patterned tile floors to the bentwood chairs and mirrored walls, has been borrowed from across the Channel. But Côte isn’t backward-looking; it’s a modern interpretation of a classic concept that’s designed to suit the British market. It also ticks off all the classics when it comes to food and wine: you can always find steak-frites, moules marinière and crème caramel here, as well as the bottles of Chinon, Picpoul and even Orangina you might want to quaff with them. ‘Plat rapides’ such as hachis parmentier or poulet grillée, plus fortnightly changing specials including duck confit are useful additions to the carte, as is the ‘formule’ breakfast of full English, juice and coffee. A solid high-street presence.

The food and service were exceptional and fantastic value for money (we had the set price menu but the normal menu wouldn't make a huge dent in bank balance either). Would happily have paid double for the experience we had! I had a delicious smoked salmon starter, followed by chunky fishcakes.

Côte was an impulse decision made whilst walking down Wardour Street looking for a quick bite to eat. We were seated immediately, drinks and bread quickly followed, the Bistro options were very reasonably priced, food came quickly and was absolutely delicious. The Wine list was a little limiting as their best Bordeaux was a Fifth Growth (the quick bite had suddenly turned into a fully blown 3 course meal), but a perfectly decent bottle was found which exalted our main courses of Steak and special of Venison, a small Cheese course to finish off the Wine signalling the end of a very good meal indeed. Highly recommended.

Been several times now, the best chicken and french fries in town. Like many good things, its a simple idea well executed. French bistro style, simple menu, good wine list not long but carefully selected and reasonably priced. Serving staff I would say have been recruited more for their visual appeal than their experience but they are enthusiastic, friendly and keen to learn! Atmostphere is as you would want it to be for a restaurant situated in the most vibrant part of town. I think its fabulous value for money, you would be hard pressed to source and cook ingredients of this quality cheaper yourself. Great for chicken lovers of all ages, not so good for those who would be just as happy with a KFC. Would now revise my view of staff, went last week ( Nov 2010 ) and was served by a very knowledgeable young lady. What they do they still do very well indeed, whats not to like about very good chicken and chips!
