Chucs Restaurant & Boutique
Chucs in Mayfair has branched out into fashionable Notting Hill with this all-day Italian restaurant and bar coupled with a 1950s-style menswear boutique. Californian healthy eating holds sway at breakfast, with egg-white pancakes or acai granola, but the fun increases at night. Sip Negronis in the chic first-floor cocktail bar (all 1950s glamour) before heading down to the cosy mirrored dining room where seating is at booths or banquettes, and doors open to an outdoor terrace. You’ll find cossetting service from staff in crisp white jackets, along with a familiar menu of beef carpaccio, Sicilian prawn tartare, pasta dishes, and grills such as octopus with potatoes and olives, steaks, and a fine venison fillet with wild mushrooms and polenta. Hollywood glory days are manifest in the traditional Cobb salad, Russian caviar and a movie-mogul wine list full of big-deal white Burgundy, Super Tuscans and Champagne (yet few more-affordable bottles). There’s much to like here, but the kitchen hadn’t properly clicked into gear when we visited (on day two of operation). Given time, though, we expect the cooking to match the high standards of the Mayfair original.
