SquareMeal Review of
Caley Sample Room
Once a tasting warehouse adjoined to the nearby Caledonian Brewery, this utilitarian, single-storey pub takes the whole subject of craft beer very seriously. No tipple is too obscure – from
Scottish stouts, German weissbier, American pale ales and Belgian triples to chocolate stout from New York’s Brooklyn Brewery. Wine drinkers are also well served with some 22 options by the glass.
Matching the booze is a menu of good-value, superior pub grub that mixes staples such as fish pie and beef stew with Euro-themed ideas including confit duck with haricot beans, veal cutlet with
polenta or an open lasagne of butternut squash and wild mushrooms. Foodie-themed beer-matching evenings are a special feature of the place. Inside, the cavernous interior is generally busy,
laid-back and family-friendly – sports fans should note that Murrayfield and Hearts’ Tynecastle football ground are nearby.
