SquareMeal Review of
Café in the Crypt
With a name speaking to a time when this corner of Trafalgar Square was actually surrounded by countryside, this venue is still imbued with the calm you might expect from a working church. The café can be found in the bowels of this historic place and is a real oasis away from the hubbub outside. Drop in for a breakfast of scrambled eggs on toast or make it a full English with the addition of sausage, bacon, tomato and beans, though there are croissants, cereals and yoghurts for those who prefer them. As the day progresses so does the kitchen: lunch and dinner sees a daily changing menu of salads, sandwiches and classic main courses, followed by proper crumble and custard. As far as possible, everything is sustainably sourced in the UK and prices are set as low as possible, making this the bargain of the area – especially for afternoon tea. If you have the time and inclination, think of combining a visit here with a concert upstairs or, of course, a service in the church itself.
