SquareMeal Review of Byron Upper Street

‘The best burger on the high street’ & other superlatives are regularly tossed in the direction of Byron Hamburgers, the chain that even hipsters will admit to liking. There’s nothing ‘flash or clever’ about the concept; it’s all about ‘honest, juicy burgers served medium with a proper bun’, plus fries & ‘damn fine’ milkshakes. Gourmet twists are notable for their absence, though specials surface from time to time – note the cult favourite Big D & the Uncle Sam with a glazed bun & American cheese. The attention to detail extends to the rest of the offering, including US & British craft beers, soft drinks & decent coffee. Ambience can be anywhere on the mood spectrum, from ‘pleasant hubbub’ to manic. Service puts far posher places to shame.

Byron is the latest offering in good-quality, fast-food burgers in London. The burgers are genuinely good but largely unadventurous and predictable. As with other chains before it (e.g. GBK, Hache) Byron offers a good burger with no surprises; you won't leave disappointed but equally you wont rush to tell your friends. Touches of class (e.g. the restaurant cards are printed on playing cards) go some way toward making up for this, but overall it is not a restaurant which you will keep thinking about after you leave.

Damn good burgers. Maybe a bit smaller that others, but very good. I love the way Byron design their spaces, and the atmosphere in them. Take you pick with the burgers.. They're all great!
