Bumpkin Chelsea

SquareMeal Review of Bumpkin Chelsea

“What a find!” exclaims a fan of Bumpkin’s easy-going ‘country-meets-city’ vibe, its welcoming staff and earthy cooking. Inside, the rustic-chic decor may have seen better days, but the covered “secret garden” more than makes amends with its Astroturf, Formica tables, fairy lights and summertime marquee – perfect for whiling away Sunday afternoon with some roast beef and a few Bloody Marys. Food-wise, it’s all about big flavours, big helpings and seasonal British cuisine “at its very best”: game terrine with smoked bacon jam; foraged mushrooms with sourdough toast; salmon Wellington with samphire; haunch of venison with celeriac, cabbage and raisin gravy. Pies, cheeses and puddings such as apple crumble also wave the Union Jack, and some English bottles even sneak their way onto the wine list. We’re pleased to report that service seems to have picked up in recent months.

What a find! We spent such a lazy Sunday in their 'secret garden' drinking bloody marys and scoffing roasts. We were a fairly large group, which can sometimes be awkward - certainly in restaurants on a Sunday. We were made to feel totally at ease however and the service was so friendly. The food was perfect - great sized portions too. We will defo be becoming new regulars for sure. See you soon!

I've been to Bumpkin twice in the last month and been left sorely disappointed not once but twice now - a bad experience once can be put down to just bad luck but after the second time I will certainly not be returning nor recommending Bumpkin...I find that sad as the food and atmosphere are good and it could potentially be a lovely place to go for lunch or dinner. I went for dinner twice and both times the service was appalling - firstly because there was little service and when there was it was bad. -They missed one person's food order - if you have 7 people at a table you should have 7 main courses! - a burger order arrived medium even though they had asked for medium rare, the person delivering the food said they couldn't do any more rare than medium - why did someone not mention this when ordering -When ordering coffee were told we could only have black coffee as they had run out of milk - it is London not the middle of the countryside so if that was the case someone should/could have run out to get more - at our suggestion of popping over the road to get some ourselves someone worked out that they could go. -The food took forever to come (after having waited ages to get someone's attention to take the order). There appears to have been a private party going on in the back the second time I was there which meant even worse service. -When it came to paying the bill as we went through it we saw that other people's drinks had been put on our bill. -The front door was constantly left open by people coming in and going out and not only did it mean it was unpleasantly cold but one person at our table spent the entire evening jumping up to close it - when we mentioned this to a member of staff they knew that was constantly a problem - why can't it be put on a manual lever so it automatically closes itself once released. All in all a bad experience and not one I would wish to repeat more than twice.

Kiddies party going on in courtyard area, perhaps reason for very slow service. Apparently no juice available (we were there for brunch on a Sunday), which was a bit odd. Overall, food actually was quite good. Just need to be more attentive towards customers.

We arrived and were seated outside, which we didn't mind. The restaurant was almost empty and the waitress promptly arrived with the food menu, we also asked for the wine list. The food order was taken but despite being reminded twice about the drinks list, we had to ask again, after starters arrived. The food itself was ok but it took a long time to arrive and when it did, it was not cooked how we asked. it was however, way too late to re-order. Getting the bill was not easy either, there was simply not enough staff to attend to all clients. We fed back to the management our concerns and were assured that they are on the case to fix all of the issues outlined above, i hope it does work.

I went for a late-afternoon Sunday lunch with a group of friends. This restaurant had such a classy and comfy feel about it and I liked the fact that it is situated just off the main road… and even has a back patio area (which I bet is lovely in the summer). The food was delicious and the staff were ‘on the ball’ and friendly. This was a roast dinner difficult to top! Strongly recommend!
