SquareMeal Review of Bright Courtyard Club

Aiming to emulate the Shanghai original, this huge, high-gloss outpost of the Bright Courtyard Club comes complete with some lovely porcelain pieces, tea sets for sale, huge chunks of polished wood, screens and stools, plus an atrium for for dim sum. Naturally, much of the cooking has a Shanghai-style slant (dumplings, marinated tofu, smoked fish etc), and the menu has lots of luxe touches including Madagascan jumbo prawns with black truffle dressing; otherwise, expect intriguing ideas such as edamame with zhouzhuang pickles, braised sea cucumber in abalone sauce, dry-fried lobster with egg yolk or pork belly with ‘grandmum’s recipe’. Sadly the food is reckoned to be “OK, at best”, with long waits and “rude” service ruining it for one couple. Drinks-wise, a wine wall suggests an interest in the subject, but tea is also taken seriously.

Very comfortable environment. The service is much better than most of the Chinese restaurant. Food quality is good. It will be excellent if more variety is available.

We visit most of the top Chinese restaurants in London and have concluded that Bright Courtyard provides the most consistently high quality food with generally attentive service in the Capital. the weakest area is the neutral décor and occasional misunderstandings from Shanghai.

Usually quite a popular restaurant. iPads instead of menus. Good food. Front desk service should improve significantly. Big restaurant.

My wife had been here for a friend's birthday midweek at lunch and had a lovely meal so we went with friends on a Saturday evening. Given this is a reasonably expense restaurant we had high standards but hard to imagine how it could have been worse. Firstly they didn't have enough menus, one iPad although they eventually found a couple of paper menus. The food was ok (at best), a couple of dishes were cold. We sent one back and the same portion came back microwaved so we didn't send the other one back. Having received half our starters we then had to wait half an hour for the rest of starter, so having arrived at 8.30 it was after 10 before we had been served all starters. Then they tried clearing the plates before we were finished and the waitress was rude to my wife . When we told the manager he desciplined her at our table in front of us!! We didn't have a main course as was too late so left hungrey. Will definitely not be going back.

Best dishes: starters: crispy chilli smoked chicken, soft shell crab, prawn dumplings, prawn toast Mains: lamb very very good, vegetables not great compared to other chinese places and quite expensive, duck very fatty skin but decent wrt taste, iron bowl marinated chicken pretty good, beef pretty good although not as good as lamb. Overall good food but around £50/person with wine. yauatcha just as good if not better and the same price bracket with a better vibe/atmosphere.

A bit chaotic, and, sad to say, both us of us had sore throats afterwards. Food was interesting TBH, but he whole things needs co-ordination and staff training. London needs a good quality Chinese to challenge the staus quo. I hope these guys can overcome their teething troubles and achieve their goal. We rate the top Chinese as 1. Princess Garden 2. Pearl Liang 3. Royal China Baker St

I had my wedding at Bright Courtyard recently. A small occasion on a Sunday afternoon, we had around 30 guests. I only gave the manager 5 days notice, but he fulfilled every request I made, was so unbelievably helpful even satisfying certain dietary requirements needed for our full menu. On the day the restaurant was really really busy but the service given to us was still excellent. Now onto the main reason anyone really goes to a restaurant…the food. Every single one of my guests just sat there and scoffed their faces for over 3 hours and no one left unsatisfied. Firstly, dim sum is outstanding, you can really tell that everything is prepared fresh and to perfecting high standards, with such things as prawn dumplings with seemingly no filler, just beautiful juicy prawn. We had plenty of mains to such as Cantonese roast duck and crispy seafood noodle, as good as I have had anywhere. I don't have a bad thing to say about this restaurant, the staff and especially the manager Andrew are all great, very friendly, helpful and professional. My new favourite Chinese restaurant.

Never let me down. The shanghai signature dishes are always my favorite. Now they even invite pianist on site during the weekend which makes the whole restaurant more elegant. The staff are always helpful. Will come again definitely.

Fantastic! Thank god an outstanding alternative to the impersonal public food hall that is the Royal China Club! Shanghai born polish head waiter is outstanding! Excellent food recommendations and knowledgable wind recommendations. It just knocked Nobu of my favourite Asian restaurant position. Thank you for the excellent service, comfortable, tasteful environment and intelligent caring service.
