SquareMeal Review of Boisdale of Bishopsgate

“Unapologetically old school”, and a welcome alternative to the chains hereabouts, the City branch of Boisdale might be mistaken for a gregarious gentleman’s club with its deep-red walls, leather seats, dedicated cigar list and assorted Caledonian memorabilia. That said, it’s far from pretentious, with friendly service and a menu of hearty Scottish fare keeping things relaxed. You might kick off with a plate of Highland venison and wild boar terrine with pistachios, pickles and toasted sourdough, before tackling roast Blackface haggis with mash and bashed neeps, some grass-fed, dry-aged Aberdeenshire beef or pan-fried fillet of Orkney salmon with braised violet artichokes, wild mushrooms and chervil. After that, how about a dark Valrhona chocolate parfait and peach jelly? With its fondness for live jazz and its show-stealing whisky selection, Boisdale oozes dressed-down masculinity, but it’s also “perfect for a girly lunch”, according to one fan.

Grana Padano

Grana Padano has become the world’s best-selling PDO cheese and one of the most loved products in Italy. It has been made with the same passion for almost 1,000 years in the heart of the Po River Valley in Northern Italy using only local milk, and aged from nine to over 20 months. What’s more, 30g of Grana Padano PDO contains the same nutritional value as approximately one pint of milk and it is lactose free due to its long ageing and production process. Real Grana Padano cheese can be recognised by the small diamond lozenges on its rind. So always check there is some rind on the piece you are buying.

If you can manage to find the place down a little alley off Bishopsgate opposite Liverpool St Station, then you're in for treat as you step back into tartan time. Boisdale is unapologetically old school from the interiors to the menu. Scottish staples are all there from the haggis to the smoked salmon, the venison to the Aberdeen Angus steaks. n this occasion we were there for the grouse, roasted with all the trimmings. The did a superb job, and our simple starters of smoked Dunkeld Salmon, said and chicken liver pate were very good. The grouse were cooked to perfection, pink, but not bloody, and good tender young birds too. Service and delivery were very professional and in all it couldn't have gone better. The bill was big though, and at GBP35.00 a bird, not so surprising, however it must make Boisdale the top end of pricing for grouse in London. By the end of September the market price has come down considerably from August 12th at the butcher's door (circa nine quid), so they were slightly taking the Michael we thought. Including a large glass of Chablis, and a bottle of mid range Rioja, the bill came to GBP275.00

Following a previous visit to Boisdale for dinner with two girlfriends which had been very enjoyable to us all I thought I'd go again last night with another friend. Again, it was a pleasant experience, the food was superb, service second to none and the atmosphere was excellent. Before my first visit I was slightly concerned that the live piano music might be slightly disturbing but this is most definitely not the case, in fact, this contributes to the whole dining experience in a most agreeable way. The musician/s is/are exellent and provide a fantastic non- intrusive backdrop to the whole scenario. Will most certainly go again.

My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary last night at Boisdale Bishopsgate and had the Jacobite set menu (£29.50/person, a glass of Prosecco, a sharing platter of Chateaubriand & lobster, a plate of 3 desserts to share). The meat we had ordered “blue” (very rare) came as ordered and obviously perfectly aged as it melted away in our mouth. The lobster was perfectly cooked as it was as tender, sitting in its shell thus requiring no work on our part. The dish had just enough butter on top enhancing, without modifying, the lobster's flavour. The side potato wedges were a bit too soft and flavourless but we had not come for this and we are quite demanding on this side as we have experienced a few times the Belgium ones in Brussels. The desserts were: - a variation of Eaton mess, we are not fans of the dish in general as we find it too heavy, but we found not fault in this one - crème brûlée, a good size portion with real vanilla nearly finished us off but we still managed to have the last desert in front of us that is, - chocolate fondant, which had been made with properly dark chocolate, which definitely finished us off, satiated and satisfied The waitress was friendly, smiling, attentive and knew her job spot on. The live piano was at the perfect level for background and atmosphere. I cannot comment on the wine as we did not order any and as French we are biased against Prosecco relative to Champagne, which should not be expected in a £29.5/person set menu anyway. Overall a great experience at very good value with perfect quantities and professional service; a “hidden” gem in the area.

Continues to provide good quality food, mainly sourced from Scotland. Haggis starter highly recommended, as you get just the right amount to remind you how good Haggis can be when well cooked and made with good quality ingredients. Have it without the whiskey. Service was excellent, and staff knew the menu and food inside out.

Seven years into London it still holds the record for the best steak eaten in the UK. The whisky infused haggis was a bit odd – but very enjoyable.

Had a lovely team lunch there yesterday which was then totally ruined by the attitude and manner of the manager, which can best be described as disgraceful. Sheep being herded to slaughter get treated better. A manager demanding customers to stand in one spot and skull their full glasses of wine in 5 minutes is blatantly rude, not to mention irresponsible. There are much nicer restaurants in the city for you to spend your money at!
