The first London branch of a French chain, Big Fernand delivers plump burgers with a Gallic accent in its casual, dual-themed dining spaces. Staff wearing flat caps and plaid shirts add a lived-in touch to the ground floor’s industrial look, while the first floor is decorated like a living room and hosts events such as beer pairings and private parties. Choose beef, chicken, veal, lamb or mushroom as your base, then either take the house options or construct your own masterpiece from the various cheeses, vegetables, herbs and sauces provided. We enjoyed the veal version in an over-sized sesame bun, with oozing Fourme d’Ambert cheese and sweet notes from caramelised onion. Homemade chips arrive with a crunchy salty paprika coating, pairing nicely with a bottle of French beer. Prices are on a par with Byron or Honest Burgers – and Big Fernand delivers locally too.
Over the last couple of years, the burger offering in London has transformed from frozen lumps of limp, questionable meat available from late night chicken shops after a night in Infernos, to gourmet gastronomic offerings at street food festivals and restaurants alike. The transformation has been great for the London food scene and I have written on several occasions about how great my Burger Love is, here and here. However, things are about to get even better. We are on the precipice on a revolution…Because, the French have arrived...

Every burger reviewed from beef to veal, chicken and mushroom tooIf you buy into the stereotypical caricature of French food as a rarefied haute cuisine that abhors any sort of perfidious Anglo-Saxon influence, then the very idea of French burgers is oxymoronic. That stereotype, like any crass over-generalisation, is of course untrue – evident to anyone who’s chowed down on hearty, unfussy French dishes such as cassoulet, andouilette or ratatouille. Burgers are just as popular in France’s big cities as they are anywhere else. Big Fernand is a small, mainly Parisian burger chain that’s just opened its first...

London’s overrun with burger restaurants, surely there’s no room for any more, right? Well apparently we need another, but not another US import or those that have graduated from a street food background, oh no, a French one. Big Fernand from Paris has crossed the channel and landed in Percy Street, just off Tottenham Court Road. Now this was one we were keen to try and have been following with a watchful eye for a while, surely a French burger would be a refreshing change and the idea intrigued us. So in we went three weeks after the opening to find a restaurant overrun with staff, instead of hungry and...

Burgers have been a hot topic for the last year or two and London has benefitted from a wealth of pretty tasty joints. The French have now got in on the action and brought over a successful ‘amburger recipe in the form of Big Fernand. I was fortunate to drop by one of the Paris locations a month ago and also to be invited to sample to first UK location near Goodge St as their guest. Big Fernand has all the right ingredients: hearty portions, a varied but not overwhelming selection, quick service, and an engaging and entertaining staff...
