35 Italian Putney Roehampton

SquareMeal Review of Bibo

Rustic Italian is the theme at Bibo – a new eatery devised by busy restaurateur Rebecca Mascarenhas (Sonny's, Kitchen W8 etc) and Chris Beverley (one-time chef at Theo Randall at the InterContinental Hotel). The long, painted-brick dining room sets an unfussy tone with its bentwood chairs and plain wooden tables, allowing the food to steal the limelight. Our hearty, ham-based pasta and chickpea soup was comforting in the extreme, while slow-cooked, sage-flavoured pork belly was neatly offset by braised fennel and a sweet/sharp hit from datterini tomatoes. Fish dishes are equally self-assured – whole roast plaice with lentils, spinach, anchovy, capers and lemon needs a steady chef to get it right. There’s also plenty of attention to detail – from big napkins and carafes of free water to the well-researched, all-Italian wine list. In short, a celebration of generous, earthy goodness for Putney locals.

Sorry - this place smells of drains. Walked in last night c.19.45 - the ripe aroma hits you immediately. Sadly this is a recurring theme. My last visit was so (un) memorable I had completely forgotten I had been there before. Looked on SQM for somewhere to go and saw the write up and thought, I'd give it a go. One table of 4, a couple of ladies who (long) lunched and us.. rattling around a vast space with dreary lift music. Was like a station bar. I declined the offer of a drink from the pleasant enough (sole employee visible) as I waited for my guest, and so wandered off. N'er to be seen again, well certainly 10 minutes anyway. As the menu looked rather unremarkable and I really couldn't think of any compelling reason to stay, we walked out. Was a terrible place as Wallace and Vomit or whatever, maybe it's just one of 'those' venues.

Putney did not have a decent Italian until the arrival of BIBO. Had several meals here, all were consistently excellent food wise. Wine selection is large and caters to all tastes. Service was good ; setting is not terribly exciting but I was really there for the food. Keep it up guys.

This is probably the best italian restaurant in this neighbourhood. Food was fantastic; started off with the scallops which was very fresh and tasty followed by a rump steak medium cooked which was juicy and full of flavour. Opted out of dessert and don't drink so can't comment on those. Service was courteous and reasonably fast.

Great addition to Putney eating: imaginative menu, thoughtful wine list, classic cocktails (some with a twist) and fantastic food. With their new addition of brunch ( daily from 11-4) all bases are covered. Recent must try dishes are courgettes fritters; and soft polenta with new season ceps, garlic, parsley & parmesan (both from the brunch menu); calves liver with pancetta & sage; roast Atlantic cod with herb crust; and ANY risotto (my litmus test for any Italian restaurant!). Puds and cheese always great. I'd be happy to eat here every day!

For the record we havent eaten here so food rating is meaningless. It looked inviting and there were people inside eating. There was no menu on display so we went in to ask if we could see the menu(my partner is veggie so we wanted to see if they offered more than a token beetroot risotto) we were officiously asked if we had a reservation, i said no and was told that they were fully booked tonight( really? What about the 15 empty tables behind you?) but we were welcome to stay for a drink at the bar. No thank you. I appreciate teething problems but east putney is not a destination venue for dining. Its all about locals who want to continue to go out on a regular weekly basis that are the lifeblood of any new venture. So much for a rousing welcome from your newest neighborhood joint…
