SquareMeal Review of Benihana Chelsea

Loud, frenetic and packed with enough theatre to keep kids and grown-ups entertained, the Benihana chain has been an international success story since launching in New York in 1950. The group has never quite lifted off on these shores, but its subterranean King’s Road site remains a clear hit for children’s birthday parties and suchlike – thanks largely to Bennie’s flamboyant at-table chefs, who regularly steal the show with their joking, juggling and lighting of trademark onion ‘volcanoes’. Dinners come as set packages, built around steaks, tuna, black cod and other luxury ingredients, cooked over the hibachi grill in front of your eyes. While the formula is tried and trusted, the site is starting to look a little tired and costs can quickly add up: “the food needs to be a lot better and more plentiful at these prices”, noted one reader.

This was my second time at Benihana. My reservation was for 8 PM and they made us wait in the lounge until 8.45 when we were finally seated at the table. We ordered right away but still no chef was sent to our table to prepare any food. When we checked up at 9, the waitress said that the chef was on his way. Unfortunately no one arrived to make dinner until 9.30 and we ate at around 10. This is a ridiculously long amount of time to wait for food and along with the poor service I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon. It also seemed that around 10 different kids were celebrating their birthdays here on the same night – I didn't know that this was such a kiddy birthday party restaurant! This obviously ruined the ambiance as it was way too loud. The food was quite good, but it's definitely not worth the two hour wait.

With many dishes priced at £50 the food here really needs to be a lot better and more plentiful. The onion soup and small salad hardly compensate for the fact that you are paying £50 for a few bites of steak and lobster.

This restaurant has been around for years and it certainly shows, it even smells old – the moment you enter, it smells of fish. Apart from what is cooked in front of you, the rest of the food tastes straight out of the freezer. Waiting staff hurry you up encouraging you to eat in time with other people on your table even if you have just arrived and ordered starters they want to start the cooking – so you could be overloaded with too many dishes… difficult to keep up – for price you pay, this should not happen. Dirty dishes are not replaced, only emptied and replaced in front of you. Saying all that, the actual Hibashi/Teppanyaki is ok and the chefs can be quite entertaining. I had come to Benihana over the years but not in a long time – this time a disappointing experience, in need of a serious re-vamp!

Benihana is a very fun place to dine, but I have eaten better Japanese food! I took my younger brother here once for the sole reason that it's a fun place and he would likely think it was ‘cool’! Which he did, and we had a real laugh together. For the unitiated the difference simply is all in the food preparation methods, instead of there being a hidden away kitchen, you watch your food being prepared and cooked in front of you on a large Hibachi Grill. And the chefs do this with gusto and humour! The menu is limited, I think mainly due to the methods of cooking here, but then you come here for entertainment rather than a gastro experience! You have a choice of either steak, salmon, prawns or seabass etc and then the side dishes are really the same, so rice, vegetables etc. However, the food is very well cooked, tasty and tender and all done wih a smile. Overall a good experience and well worth it in terms of an entertaining dinner!

Benihana is always good fun, and the staff here are great. The food is cooked in front of you by a chef with a sense of humour, and the quality of the food is first class. Highly recommended, and for the uninitiated totally unlike the usual Japanese restaurant.
