Bel Air November 2015

Squaremeal Review of Bel-Air City ?

Decked out in bright white and sunny yellow, featuring bespoke wallpaper dotted with sketches of Californian icons (think Muscle Beach and Sly Stallone), Bel-Air is so resolutely feel-good it makes Bill Granger look like Eeyore. Fittingly for a Cali-themed eatery, the menu is super-healthy, but with no trace of worthiness. As well as the de rigueur platters of superfood-packed salads displayed at the counter – try the melt-in-the-mouth roasted aubergines with yoghurt, tahini and dukkah – Bel-Air’s hot dishes are also worth sampling. Our favourites are the lightly breaded crab cakes (baked, not fried), full of clamorous Thai flavours and served with a herb- and citrus-loaded salad, and the braised chicken with delicate hints of preserved lemon and plump olives. Breakfasts, too, deserve attention. The only snag? Seating is at a premium: clearly, Shoreditch’s tech workers and yoga nuts eat on the hop.
