SquareMeal Review of Bank Birmingham

Bronze Award

Set apart from the chain eateries that cluster around the Broad Street end of Brindleyplace, this ultra-modern bar and brasserie makes a grand statement about space, colour and light. It delivers everything we’ve come to expect from the vibrant Bank group: razor-sharp service and cooking that’s brave, confident and wildly eclectic. There are Brit classics such as rib-eye steak with Bearnaise sauce and chips or calves liver with sage, onion and crispy bacon alongside Carlingford rock oysters, char grilled chicken Caesar salad. More international dishes include a chilli squid Thai noodle salad ahead of crispy duck breast teamed with Chinese greens, sesame and honey dressing.

Complete Let Down

We booked a table for 6 at this restaurant to celebrate our wedding at the end of April. We had made the reservation in February and rang 3 times to confirm it, mentioning that it was a wedding, an important event, and they acknowledged this.
On the day of the wedding we had a phone call a few minutes before we arrived to say that they didn’t have a table for us! They had opened up the back terrace but it had rained and they had to give away our table to accommodate the tables being moved from the back to the front of the restaurant. We could not believe what we were hearing. We went to see them as we were only minutes away and after airing my dissatisfaction (to say the least), they found us a table. By this time it had soured the meal somewhat even though we tried not to let it spoil the day. (They did try to make amends by giving a free bottle of Prosecco). As if this wasn’t bad enough, 4 of the 6 meals were awful, steak was tough, risotto was bland, burgers were tasteless. We didn’t complain at the time as we didn’t want to spoilt the atmosphere. When we did ring up to complain a few days later we were told that the manager would get back to us. Twice we’ve been promised a call back and twice it hasn’t happened, this sums up the service of the restaurant, not what I would expect from a restaurant of this calibre. All in all a complete disaster from start to finish.
