In 2016, a wholesale makeover of the Soho flagship of this mid-priced Indian restaurant chain saw the introduction of a destination drinking venue. Masala Zone’s Bangle Bar is imaginatively and colourfully decked out in vibrant Indian artefacts and posters. Its capsicum-red high stools and wooden chairs (hand-turned in Udaipur) are where to kick back with cocktails that are given a subcontinental slant. Boxwallah Punch is worthy of investigation (a liquorice root-infused rum, guava, lime and ginger-beer cooler), as is the Chai Spiced Negroni, and a Hyderabad Fizz that sneaks curry leaf, bitters and Suze into a classic G&T. To eat, dip into Masala Zone’s street-food snacks – there’s plenty to choose from, including samosas, bhajis and pakoras, as well as the likes of pepper chicken, and crispy fried prawns with a vindaloo mayonnaise dip.
