SquareMeal Review of Balls Brothers Hay's Galleria

A glass of wine, a game of pétanque, a platter of British farmhouse treats to share – there’s much to like about this Balls Brothers outpost housed in the attractive, relatively tranquil open-air galleria; however, you’ll need to head downstairs if you require sustenance in the dining room proper. Brick-lined arches hint at the building’s former use as a wharf cellar, making it an atmospheric – almost conspiratorial – location for some indulgent wining & dining. Seafood is the focus at this particular branch, so crab ‘crumble’ on Melba toast with watercress salad might open proceedings ahead of Cornish cod, crayfish & flageolet bean cassoulet. Meanwhile, juicy steaks assuage hungry omnivores, with the DIY ‘volcanic black rock grill’ as a big selling point. The food is matched by a reliable Balls Brothers wine list.

I visited this restaurant on a Tuesday lunchtime accompanied by 3 colleagues. We were all on our lunch break so time was of the essence. Sadly once our drinks orders had been taken no-one reappeared to take our food order for at least 20 minutes. The food order once placed was slow to arrive an the portions were very small for the prices charged. I had the fishcakes and they were amazing but sadly let down by the lack of presentation. Thankfully we had all ordered chips on the side otherwise we would've been returning to the office hungry.
