SquareMeal Review of Angler

Squaremeal London Hot 100 2016From the moment you arrive for drinks on the gorgeous roof terrace, it’s clear that Michelin-starred Angler knows how to host its diners. Given that it’s located on the seventh floor of the South Place Hotel, superb views come as standard – thanks to a giant sloping window that looks out onto the busy street below. “Great seafood in a calming atmosphere” sums it up, with comfy striped chairs, light colours and an impressive foliage-motif mirror running along on wall of the opulent dining room. The kitchen matches the sophisticated vibe with a menu of precision-tuned contemporary dishes ranging from roast octopus with taramasalata, chipirones and spicy salsa verde to light-textured John Dory accompanied by coco beans, bacon and sardines. Meat eaters might go for smoked chicken wings with chanterelles followed by a tasting of Iberian pork, while dessert could bring a rich, warm chocolate cake with banana-milk ice cream and crunchy peanut butter. Service is impeccable, and a devoted sommelier is on hand to pair each course with wines from the varied list. Pricey, but highly recommended.

What an amazing evening we had here - the service is excellent, the food blows your taste buds away - the atmosphere is wonderful, the wine list is so reasonable considering the class of restaurant. Really good value considering the quality - cannot recommend it highly enough.

From the delicious canapes through the enchantingly delicious amuses bouche and on to a well balanced and imaginative menu. The food was superb, the wine list, not inexpensive but comprehensive, the service attentive and engaging and my clients were delighted. Good restaurants come and go - I really hope this one stays the course.

The standard of the seafood was outstanding! The staff were attentive, professional, and understood when to be available without being overbearing. Probably the best seafood I have had this year!!! Beautiful room, even or a rainy day. Will definitely go back!

The food here is stunning, the restaurant is cool, light and spacious with a lovely terrace for when the sunshines. It is expensive and cost wise not for the faint hearted but everything about it is excellent. For business purposes it is a great venue and wonderful for special occassions.

The restaurant is set on the 7th Floor of a trendy hotel in the midst of the City. The view is unfortunately not great (construction site). The setting is quite formal (uniformed waiters): perfect for a business meal, perhaps less so for a romantic occasion (although feeling cosy and fairly intimate). I was totally impressed by the impeccable and attentive service, and even more so by the food. The complimentary ‘mises en bouche’ (Parmesan mini-croquette and asparagus cream) were delicate and full of flavours. My langoustine and lobster cocktail and the monkfish I had as a main were equally well-prepared, with fleshy fish cooked to perfection. The portions are the right size (you leave with a pleasant feeling after a three-course meal). All in all, it is the first time in a long while that I dine at such an expensive restaurant and leave feeling that the quality of the service provided and the food consumed justifies every single penny. I simply cannot wait to find an excuse to go back!

My colleagues and I went here for a work lunch and took the £30 set menu. The restaurant's art-deco decor was indeed upmarket, there was a good amount of space around our table (which is not always the case in the city, and contrary to some of the reviews to this restaurant) and had a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. The service was similarly very good but what stood out most for us was the quality of the food on the set menu. Between us we had three of the four starters, mains and deserts and couldn't fault freshness, flavour, quality of the cooking or presentation. What's more, to get this level of quality for only £30 per head is very rare. My (french) colleague chose the wine so I didn't see the menu but he was impressed, which isn't often the case! We will definitely be going back and are looking forward to trying the terrace this summer.

No need for that. Wonderful restaurant. Can't wait for summer when customers can take full advantage of the outside seating. Food was beautifully presented, excellent attention to detail and I really enjoyed my food as did my friends. Nice atmosphere too and incredibly busy for a Tuesday evening but not overpoweringly so. Still felt quite private.

The title says it all: grilled dover sole is deservedly popular, but here it led the quartet with its delicate flavours and superb, tender-yet-firm texture. Sauce vierge played the perfect second violin and spinach – a great viola, with its lower, savoury tones. The cello – half-bottle of excellent Chablis – completed the spectacular ensemble. I can't wait for the repeat performance!

We had a team Christmas lunch here and couldn't recommend it highly enough. Total surprise entering the restaurant as the ground floor is very dark and atmospheric – The Angler is bright and modern and when the sun is shining, an absolutely delightful space to find in the middle of the City. The food was exemplary – we all had something different and each course was cooked to perfection. The service was attentive but not intrusive. It's not cheap, but then I wouldn't expect anything less for this calibre of restaurant and location. Atmosphere is slightly stuffy at lunchtime due to a lot of business meetings over lunch but didn't affect our table/party. Will definitely be revisiting in a hurry.
