SquareMeal Review of
40 The Hill
The younger sibling of Reds Bar & Grill on Wimbledon Broadway, this all-day venue plies its trade in a convivial setting of black leather furniture and bentwood chairs, with a light-filled
conservatory for bright days. Thoughtfully sourced ingredients are used to good effect in dishes ranging from Ragstone goats’ cheese with beetroot carpaccio and elderflower curd to fillet of
rare-breed Scottish beef with Jerusalem artichoke gratin, although the kitchen also soaks up plenty of European influences – think grilled sardines with sauce vierge and garlic croûte, coq au vin
with tarragon emulsion or pearl barley risotto with fennel, broad beans and preserved lemon. To drink, there’s a decent selection of reasonably priced wines, in addition to Meantime beers and
loose-leaf teas. The place also does a fair trade in coffee and cake, although brunch and Sunday roasts steal the show at weekends.
