Pret a better choice for sandwiches

by Katherine C.   bronze reviewer (5)

Dec 2013

Never eaten in the restaurant but the bar food to the low side of average. A lettuce leaf, a slice of tomato and teaspoon of tuna mayonnaise do not a sandwich make. Unimaginative.

Michelin Star? Not fo rmuch longer.

I booked this for a Saturday night at 2130, intending to head out afterwards for a glass or two. However the starters still hadn't arrived by 2245, after which the main then took a further 50 minutes. Got out of there after midnight (without desserts or coffee as the restaurant was empty before we had even finished our mains). Of course this is too late to get in anywhere in Mayfair, so we all gave up after what was a thoroughly disappointing evening. Extremely average food, nothing memorable at all, and the service was absolutely appalling. Avoid.

An identity crisis...

by Katherine C.   bronze reviewer (5)

Mar 2013

This place looks fantastic and is everything a deli should be. I'll say from the outset that the pastries look so good it draws you in: indeed the brownie did not disappoint, and was probably one of the best I've ever tasted. However, The Life Goddess seems to be having, what may be teething problems, but what currently amounts to an identity crisis: it isn't just a deli, but doesn't quite work as a cafe/restaurant. Staff seemed unsure whether they were serving at the counter or waiting tables, and it wasn't clear whether you order and sit, or go sit and peruse the menu. The main I had, a beef stew in tomato sauce, was bland and the beef was so tough as to suggest another 4 hours cooking: the £10.50 price tag would have been extortionate at the best of times in a place like this, but it should taste better at £6.50. In short – enter it as a deli and enjoy a great cup of coffee, Greek mezze and pastries: but the hot food needs a lot of work.

Avoid. I wish I had seen these reviews before I arranged to meet a friend here for lunch on Thursday last week. Whilst there was nothing wrong with the food, just standard fare, it was riduculously overpriced for what it was (£13-23 for a baked potato). The service however, was something very special. It took 20 minutes to get the first glass of champagne and the service was slow and quite miserable. However, in their defence, can I just say that, for all the comments about the waitresses previously, the cause of their downtrodden, unmotivated demeanour was abundantly clear to my companion and I: the head waiter (I assume he was the head…he certainly thought he was in charge). I have NEVER in my life heard anyone speak to staff and customers like this. Someone needs to give him some training, as it looks extremely bad to see disdainful and rude management of the other waiting staff, and detracts from the overall dining experience for customers. He wouldn't get a job at Macdonalds. We did not have the misfortune to interact with him directly, although I did express some sympathy to our waitress and nearly said something regarding his behaviour towards the customers he seated next to us. He stood between our table and theirs ( narrow gap, so his behind was practically in my companion's face) prodding the guy in the shoulder and almost shouting at him for at least five minutes , because the customer was saying, perfectly calmly and reasonably, that there were four in their party not two so they needed a larger table. Ruined the end of our meal. I have written to Hix directly to complain,. Unbelievable.
