Whether you’ve struck gold with a centre-court seat, are one of the Murray Mount faithful, or simply want to soak up some of Wimbledon’s unique atmosphere during this year’s All England Tennis Championships, we’ve served up some of the best restaurants in the area, either for watching the tournament, or for celebrating (or commiserating) the results.
The Fox & Grapes
What: This top-seed gastropub is broadcasting all matches live on a giant projector screen and putting Pimm’s and strawberries and cream front and centre on the menu. It means Claude Bosi’s elegant boozer will be even livelier than usual – it’s the second-best place we can think of to watch the game up-close.
Eat + drink: The beer-battered haddock and triple-cooked chips, with a glass of Billecart-Salmon Brut (or two, if you’re celebrating…)
Where: 9 Camp Road, SW19 4UN
The Ivy Café Wimbledon Village
What: Pimm’s is being served every which way during Wimbledon at this elegant neighbourhood destination. The luxurious art-deco interiors, flattering lighting and classic brasserie dishes are as timeless as The Championships themselves. Ironically, during the tennis fortnight, a table at this neighbourhood outpost of The Ivy might be harder to wangle than at the Covent Garden original…
Eat + drink: The tangy prawn cocktail makes you wonder why this dish ever went out of fashion; pair it with a lovely crisp Riesling.
Where: 75 High Street, SW19 5EQ
What: Expect this light, airy and modern Wimbledon Village favourite to be packed over Wimbledon fortnight: booking is essential, despite the restaurant’s extended opening hours during tennis season. The special Wimbledon menu is full of Modern European highlights, and there’s a huge range of wines for every type of spender.
Eat + drink: Kick off with a white peach Bellini apéritif, and indulge further with peppered beef fillet, fries and Café de Paris butter.
Where: 75-77 Ridgway, SW19 4ST
San Lorenzo Fuoriporta
What: This enduring Italian stalwart is the go-to restaurant for long-standing Wimbledon residents – during the tennis tournament, hardly anything else is discussed here. There’s a Roman feel to the dining room, with its indoor palms and floor-to-ceiling murals, but in summer, the best place to eat is undoubtedly in the sheltered courtyard.
Eat + drink: Wimbledon specials include a whole Scottish lobster dressed with olive oil, lemon and celery; enjoy with a Sicilian Chardonnay.
Where: 38 Wimbledon Hill Road, SW19 7PA
Sticks ‘n’ Sushi
What: As you would imagine, this Danish-owned Japanese-themed hybrid is a study in minimalist chic, with low-slung communal tables, bare brickwork and cool sculptural lighting. The stylish visual menu offers sushi-inspired bites (both raw and cooked) and plentiful platters, so it’s perfect for groups, and also lends itself to a quick pre- or post-Wimbledon refuel.
Eat + drink: Crab croquettes with wasabi-laced Caesar sauce, and a fruity saké from the list.
Where: 58 Wimbledon Hill Road, SW19 7PA
