StreetSmart London homeless charity project food restaurants

Homelessness charity StreetSmart celebrates its 20th anniversary this November. Every year, the charity runs a campaign which raises money for homeless people by adding £1 per table to diner’s bills at participating London restaurants. Since its conception, the StreetSmart campaign has raised £8.2 million, one hundred percent of which goes towards grass roots projects tackling homelessness, a growing issue across the country. The campaign began two decades ago with a handful of supporters in Soho, but has now grown to include over 500 participating restaurants, such as MeatliquorSt John, The River Café, Polpo, The Providores and Barrafina.

StreetSmart kicked off its 20th anniversary with a launch party on 30 October 2017, attended by top chefs from restaurants including Skye Gyngell and Peter Gordon.

Streetsmart focus on: Brixton

What do Llewelyn’s, Salon and MEATliquor have in common? They have all signed up to StreetSmart, the annual restaurant campaign that fundraises for homeless people, to raise money for Brixton Soup Kitchen this Christmas.

Since 1998, StreetSmart has raised over £8.2 million for homeless projects across the UK through the simple idea of adding a voluntary £1 pound to diners’ bills during the festive months of November and December.

Tom Muddimer, the assistant manager of Llewelyn’s in Herne Hill, explained why it was important to be participating in South London: “It’s such a diverse area and we have poverty literally on our doorstep. StreetSmart is such an easy thing for our diners and us to contribute to: the £1 is barely noticed. The fact the money stays local means we can all see the difference our support is making.”

All of the money raised stays local and goes towards supporting homeless projects in the community. In the Brixton area, all customer donations go to support Brixton Soup Kitchen. Solomon Smith and Dr. Mahamed Hashi, the founders of Brixton Soup Kitchen commented: ‘we didn’t believe it when the first £5,000 cheque arrived and we were able to purchase a van for the kitchen. StreetSmart made people believe in us and they opened the floodgates for real donations.”

Brixton restaurants participating in the campaign this year include:

-          Champagne & Fromage

-          MEATliquor

-          Salon

-          Elm Park Tavern
