Founded in 1932, Wigan are one of the youngest teams in football league. Dave Whelan - the owner of the JJB Sports chain and a former professional footballer - bought the Latics when they were an
unfashionable, small-town club languishing in what is now League Two. Arguably, they are still a little unfashionable in the shadow of the rugby league team with which they share their impressive
stadium. But with Whelan's financial clout behind them, Wigan have converted many to the attractions of the round ball by rising through the leagues to rub shoulders with the big boys.
